The Textual Variation:
3.32 ???? {B} The original reading appears to be ???? (P4 ?* B syrs, pal copsa, bo mss eth), which copyists later assimilated to ??????, the reading of both the Matthean parallel (Mt 1.4–5) and the Septuagint of 1 Chr 2.11, or to ??????, the reading of ms. B at Ru 4.20 f. (??????, ms. A). In view of the early tradition that Luke was a Syrian of Antioch it is perhaps significant that the form ???? appears to embody a Syriac tradition (the Peshitta version of Ru 4.20 f. reads ???).

Con
The issue here seems to the proper translation, or transliteration, of a proper name from the Hebrew to the Greek and whether Luke used the proper Greek word to translate, or transliterate, the Hebrew name. What role the copyists may have had in seeking to convey the proper translation, or transliteration, to the reader is unknown regardless of the speculations that have been suggested. Luke has considerable freedom to freely translate, or transliterate, Hebrew names into Greek and no legitimate error can be attributed to him or to this verse.
